The Lees-McRae College men's tennis team took two of three matches in doubles play, and registered three wins in singles action en route to a 5-4 victory over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University on Monday afternoon
in non-conference play.
Lees-McRae's (5-11) tandem of Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) opened the afternoon with an 8-4 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne's (1-14) duo of Robby Blackburn and Aroon Khatter, before the Bears' Grayson Dunn and Jarod Styres defeated Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Marcelo Tatai (Sao Paulo, Brazil), 8-3. Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) answered with an 8-6 win over Michael Owens and David Richardson.
Hayes gave the Bobcats a 3-1 advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Richardson at No. 2 singles, as Warren defeated Owens, 6-3, 6-2 in the third flight. Choi delivered the decisive point for Lees-McRae at No. 6 singles, defeating Blackburn, 6-2, 6-1. Lees-McRae now awaits the final pairings for next week's Conference Carolinas Tournament, to be hosted by Erskine College at the Sumter Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. on April 20-22. The Bobcats currently hold the sixth spot in the conference standings, which would grant them the sixth seed in the tournament if the season ended today.
