Appalachian State University baseball officially added three right-handed pitchers to its incoming recruiting class on Wednesday, head coach Chris Pollard announced. The trio of righties includes
Blake Burkett (Cumming, Ga./West Forsyth), Caleb McCann (McLeansville, N.C./Northeast Guilford) and Amos Wilmoth (King, N.C./West Stokes). The three pitchers join eight student-athletes that signed National Letters of Intent in November in the Mountaineers’ newest class of incomers. All 11 will arrive at ASU in August and take the field for the Mountaineers next spring.
RHP BLAKE BURKETT (6-3, 205, Cumming, Ga./West Forsyth)
Four-year letterwinner ... earned first-team all-county recognition as a sophomore in 2010 ... helped lead West Forsyth to “Sweet 16” of Georgia’s AAA state playoffs as a freshman in 2009 ... ranked 110th among right-handed high-school starting pitchers for the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft ... tabbed by ESPN.com as one of Georgia’s top 95 high-school players in 2012, including one of the top 64 seniors and one of the top 25 right-handed pitchers ... one of only 200 prospects invited to attend the prestigious Perfect Game National Showcase in 2011 ... also selected to attend Perfect Game’s 2011 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase ... coached by Mike Pruitt ... played for prolific East Cobb Astros U15 and U16 and East Cobb Yankees U18 summer teams ... also recruited by Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Navy.
RHP CALEB McCANN (6-1, 180, McLeansville, N.C./Northeast Guilford)
Two-time all-conference honoree ... helped lead Northeast Guilford to the final game of the 2011 North Carolina 3-A state championship series ... in addition to his pitching duties, has also been a standout middle infielder during his prep career ... represented Region 5 in the 2011 N.C. State Games ... prep teammates with Jaylin Davis, who signed a letter of intent with ASU baseball last November ... coached by David Lawing ... played for prestigious Impact Baseball Dirtbags summer team, coached by Andy Partin ... also recruited by UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina.
RHP AMOS WILMOTH (6-1, 165, King, N.C./West Stokes)
Four-year letterwinner ... despite missing much of his sophomore campaign due to injury, boasted an 8-2 record, 1.98 ERA, 53 strikeouts and only 12 walks for his prep career coming into his senior season ... a two-way standout, also brought a .410 batting average, 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 58 RBI at the plate into his final high-school campaign ... represented Region 5 in the 2011 N.C. State Games ... coached by Kirk Goodson ... played for former Major Leaguer Scott Bankhead with the North Carolina Baseball Academy Golden Spikes, where he was teammates with Jaylin Davis, who signed a letter of intent with ASU baseball last November ... also recruited by UNC Greensboro, Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.
