Chris Grayson belted a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to propel the Hickory Crawdads to the 4-3 win against the Greenville Drive, before 3,689 fans at Fluor Field on Monday night. The 'Dads (4-1)
faced Boston Red Sox left hander Andrew Miller, who made a rehab start, in the top of the first inning, before breaking through with the game's first run against Madison Younginer in the top of the fourth. Luis Sardinas led off with a single and quickly swiped second base. Grayson followed with a walk, and then Rougned Odor drove in a run with a single up the middle to score Sardinas.
Hickory's Will Lamb kept the lead intact through his first four innings of work, but the Drive (1-4) tied it up in the bottom of the fifth against relief pitcher Greg Williams. Jose Garcia doubled to lead off the inning and took third base on a passed ball one out later. Cody Koback then skied a sacrifice fly to right field, enabling Garcia to score and tying the game, 1-1.
The Drive took the lead in the sixth. A one-out double by David Renfroe set up the rally. Williams responded by striking out Keury De La Cruz for the second out, but Matt Marquis placed an infield single up the middle that was compounded by a throwing error by Odor, allowing Renfroe to score, giving the Drive a 2-1 lead.
Grayson's three-run homer off losing pitcher Hunter Cervenka in the top of the eighth put the Crawdads on top to stay. Greenville rallied with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Blake Swihart tripled to start the inning, and he scored on Renfroe's RBI double one-out later,
Phil Klein came on in the ninth and picked up his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 inning.
