There's no place like home. Just ask Watauga High men' and women's track coach Randy McDonough. The WHS men and women simply blew the field away Wednesday at Jack Groce Stadium. The men's team

won 12 events and racked up 131.5 points. Eric Dehus led the way winning two events, the 300-meter hurdles (46.54) and the triple jump (39-7). The Pioneers also swept the relay events by winning the 4x800 (9:15.34), the 4x200 (1:36.68), the 4x400 (3:32.45), and the 4x100 (45.53).
Reid Harris won the 100-meter dash (11.50); Zach Helms won the 110 hurdles (16.42), Brian Brackney won the 1,600-meter run (4:38.30); Zaric Eisenberg won the 400 (53.70); Stephen Schmal won the 200 (22.89); and Max Ruble won the pole vault (12-feet). The Pioneers bested the field by 55 points. Alexander Central finished a distant second with 76.5 points. The WHS men had 55 top-ten finishers.
The WHS women won six events and won the meet with 95 points. Alexander Central finished second with 64. Taylor Drummonds won two events, the pole vault (9 feet) and the 100 hurdles (18.51). Darby Middlebrook won the 800 (2:22.23), Tara Trivette won the high jump (4-10) and WHS also captured the 4x800 (10:54.75) and 4x400 (4:12.53) relays. The WHS women had 47 top-ten finishers.
The WHS men and women will compete in a pair of meets next weekend, April 13-14. The Pioneers will travel to Columbia, S.C. for the Taco Bell Invitational, and WHS will also be competing at the Appalachian State Invitational.
