For the second year in a row, the Watauga High baseball team will make the short trek to Forest City, N.C., for the East Rutherford Easter Tournament. The Pioneers who were fifth-place finishers in the field last season, take on West Iredell in the opening round Monday afternoon

at 2:30 p.m. at McNair Field, home of the Forest City Owls, members of the Coastal Plain League---a summer collegiate baseball league.
If WHS (8-5) wins, the Pioneers will play a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night; but if they lose, they would play their second-round game Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The finals will be played Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
"It's a good tournament atmosphere, and it gives our guys a chance to play somebody else other than our conference teams," said WHS coach Pete Hardee. "It also gives us a break from the conference schedule, and it allows our coaching staff to play some people and put them in real game siutations."
Chase (which beat WHS in the opening round last season), Alexander Central, R.S. Central, South Caldwell, East Rutherford, and Asheville round out the eight-team field. The Pioneers lost to Chase in the opening round last season, but they bouinced back to beat R.S. Central and Team Carolina in their next two games.
Our coverage Monday afternoon from Forest City begins at 2 p.m. on Oldies 100.7 FM.
