Pioneers Blowout Red Tornadoes PDF Print

The Watauga High softball blasted Hickory 10-0 by the ten-run mercy rule in 4 1/2 innings on Tuesday night. The teams endured a one hour, 14-minute lightning delay with one out in the top of the fifth inning

before play resumed. Winning pitcher Kim Robinson gave up one hit, walked four and struck out seven to earn the complete-game victory. The Pioneers pounded out ten hits.
Taylor Drummonds paced the offense with three hits, two runs scored and a run-batted-in.
Nicole Dollar had two singles, a walk, scored twice, and drove in a run; Allison Townsend had a bases-loaded double; Riley Pudney had a triple, and Robinson helped her own cause with an RBI.
Weather-permitting, the Pioneers take on T.C. Roberson in a non-conference game Thursday at the Sports Complexs.  The South Iredell game on Friday, has been cancelled.

 


WHS TENNIS TAKES TWO FROM COUGARS

 


The Watauga High men's  tennis team remained undefeated in Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play as they swept a double-header from Alexander Central at the Sports Complex Tuesday night. The Pioneers (12-1 overall; 8-0 NW3A/4A) won the opening match 6-0. Mike Smith, Harrison Battle, Chris Ludwig, Landon Taylor, Aaron Evans and Jackson Yates were victorious in singles play; the Pioneers won the second match, 5-2. Battle, Ludwig, Evans and Noah Moomaw all won their singles matches; Smith and Battle teamed up for a win in doubles play. The Pioneers entertain South Caldwell on Thursday.

 


RED TORNADOES BLANK PIONEERS


The Watauga High women's soccer team stumbled in a 2-0 loss to Hickory Tuesday night at Jack Groce Stadium. With the win, the Red Tornadoes take over sole possession of second place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference.
"Tough loss tonight," said WHS coach Brittany Bolick. "But you really realize what's important when two of your girls go down with concussions. Tonight was just not our nigt; we just couldn't get it together."
Kendyl Baird and Molly Wells both suffered concussions in Tuesday night's game. Wells was taken to the emergency room at the Watauga Medical Center for her concussion. She had a cat scan and it came back negative. Wells and Baird will be out at least a week with their concussions.
The JV team played Hickory to 1-1 tie. Marcie Mahoney scored the only WHS goal. Brooklyn Carrol had the assist.
The Pioneers (7-4 overall; 4-2 NW3A/4A) take on McDowell in a varsity-only game Thursday night at 5 p.m. at Jack Groce Stadium.

 


NORTHERN PACES WHS AT CATAWBA SPRINGS

 


The Watauga High men's golf team finished sixth at the Catawba Spring Golf Club Tuesday in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference match. The Pioneers had a team score of 344. Austin Northern paced WHS with an 83; Noah Martin of Hibriten was the leading medalist. He fired a 71. Hickory won the match with a team score of 312; Hibriten finished second with a 314. Matt Byrum and Cameron Taylor of the Pioneers each had an 86. The Pioneers travel to the Brushy Mountain Country for a NW3A/4A match on April 16. Alexander Central will be the host school.

McNEIL PACES WATAUGA MIDDLE SCHOOL GOLFERS


Rory McNeil fired a six over par 42 Tuesday and finished three shots off the lead at the Brushy Mountain Country Club. Caldwell County won the match with a 168; Alexander Central finished second with a 176. Watauga finished fourth with a 208. Colton Tucker of Caldwell County was the leading medalist with a three over par 39. Caleb Bolick and Ridge Northern each shot a 55 for Watauga.
The middle school team travels to the Lenior Golf Club on April 16. They will play a home match on April 24.
