Appalachian State University softball fell in Sunday's pitchers dual to the College of Charleston, 3-1, at Patriots Point Athletics Complex. The Mountaineers' Riley Carter earned her first career start, but took the loss as she scattered eight hits and allowed only three runs in five and a

third innings pitched.  The rookie from Jacksonville, Fla., only gave up two extra base hits and held CofC's hitters scoreless through three and two-thirds.  Fellow freshman Caroline Wainright came in relief and kept ASU within striking distance by recording two crucial scoreless outs in the sixth.  The Cougars' Stephanie Saylors only gave up three hits and one run in the complete game victory.
Charleston used clutch two-out hitting to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Lead-off hitter Lizzy Vaughn broke the scoreless game with seeing eye single to score pinch-runner Chloe Fletcher. Carly Corthell connected on the 2-2 count to drive in CofC's second run.
The Mountaineers forced two errors in the top of the fifth and were unable to capitalize on the Cougars miscues. With runs at a premium, the Cougars scored their third run of the game on a suicide squeeze by Kristy Pedigo to score Amanda Lonergan.
Appalachian's Caroline Rogers led off the seventh with a double to left center and scored two batters later on a Cynthia Gomez ground out to short.
Rogers tallied two hits and Allie Cashion recorded the one for herself.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. to open a three-game Southern Conference series with arch-rivals Western Carolina.  First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
