The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (35-10, 9-3) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Mars Hill (20-18, 5-7), 8-0 and 10-2, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field. The Bears run-ruled the Lions in both contests and improved to 13-1 in their last 14 contests. In game one, senior pitcher Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) threw her

11th shutout of the season while the Bears scored seven runs in the last two innings to end the contest in five frames.  The Bears were ahead by a 1-0 score after three innings of play before breaking the contest open with four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning.
L-R senior outfielder Tameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) connected on a two-run double in the fourth before freshman outfielder Brittany Coursen (Virginia Beach, Va.) ended the game with a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Sealey and freshman designated player Katie Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) each drove in two runs for the Bears while Taylor Morris (Weddington, N.C.) fell to 11-11 on the season after suffering the loss.
In game two, sophomore shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) and senior pinch hitter Brittany Davidson (Fort Defiance, Va.) each drove in a pair of runs as the Bears finished with 15 hits and run-ruled the Lions in six innings en route to the victory and the doubleheader sweep. Mizelle's two-run double in the bottom of the second inning helped stake Lenoir-Rhyne to a 4-0 advantage after two innings of play.
After Mars Hill cut the margin in half with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, L-R put the contest away with a five-run fifth. Lenoir-Rhyne ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to senior catcher Sarah Atkins' (Newport News, Va.) RBI single. Atkins finished with three hits on the game to lead the Bears.
Millwood (23-5) was credited with the victory while Mars Hill's Taylor Hussey (Randleman, N.C.) fell to 7-7 with the loss. In addition, Morris and Sarah Kruysman (Sarasota, Fla.) each drove in a run for the Lions in the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Augusta, Ga., to take on Augusta State in a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m. Mars Hill hosts Young Harris in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
