The Newberry Baseball Team (14-21, 8-11) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a 5-3 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (9-28, 5-14) Friday evening at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry's Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) went the distance on the mound en route to the win. McElwee improved to 4-1 on the season

after allowing just two earned runs while striking out 10 batters. The Wolves broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) connecting on the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice bunt. L-R tied the contest at three with three runs in the top of the fifth inning capped off by a two-run double from junior first baseman Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.).
Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) and Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) each finished with two hits and one run batted in to lead Newberry to the victory. Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Christian Hicks (Charlotte, N.C.) suffered the loss and fell to 1-4 on the season despite pitching a complete game as well. Hicks also struck out five in the contest.
Meanwhile, L-R freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) also tallied a pair of hits and an RBI but the Bears suffered their sixth straight setback.
The two teams wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m.
