The Watuaga High men's tennis team tasted defeat for the first time this season. The Pioneers (10-1) lost to Providence 6-3 in a non-conference match down in Charlotte. Michael Smith and Chris Ludwig were victorious
in singles play; Smith, who is unbeaten in singles play this season, teamed up with Harrison Battle for a win at No.1 doubles.
The Pioneers return home to play a double-header against Alexander Central next Tuesday, April 3.
BUNTING NAMED INDIANS NEW HEAD COACH
Fred Whalen has stepped down as head football coach at St. Stephens High. Whalen was 17-29 during his four-year stay with the program. The Indians were 4-8 last season and made the state playoffs for the first time since 2008. They lost to Crest in the opening round. Defensive coordinator Chris Bunting takes over as head coach next season. Whalen stepped down to attend graduate school.
WHS LACROSSE BURIES FREEDOM
The Watauga High men's lacrosse team blasted Freedom 10-4 in a district game Thursday night in Morganton. The Pioneers (5-3 overall; 3-0 in district play) remain unbeaten in league play. Nick Williams paced the PIoneers with four goals and two assists; Barrett Williams, who initially left the team at the start of the season and recently rejoined the program, chipped in with three goals. Barrett Williams has five goals in his first two games back.
The Pioneers travel to Hickory for a make-up match next Wednesday, April 4. The match, originally scheduled for March 16, was rained out.
