WHS Tennis Wins Ninth Straight PDF Print

The Watauga High men's tennis team defeated Wilkes Central 7-2 in a non-conference match at the Sports Complex Monday night. Mike Smith, Landon Taylor, Chris Ludwig, Aaron Evans and Jackson Yates

won in singles play; Harrison Battle and Smith picked up a win at No.1 doubles; Taylor and Ludwig won at No.2 doubles. Andrew Skeens and Will Spinetto picked up a doubles win in exhibition play. The Pioneers (9-0) entertain Hickory this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Sports Complex.

 


WHS JV SOFTBALL SWEEPS PATRIOTS

 


The Watauga High JV softball team picked up a pair of lopsided wins Monday afternoon against Freedom at the Sports Complex. WHS won the opener 11-1 in five innings; the JV team won the night cap 18-3 in four innings.
Megan Jackson got the win in the opener. She scattered four hits and struck out ten; Savannah Drummonds had two hits, three runs scored and drove in two runs. WHS broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
In game two, the Pioneers were trailing 3-1 in the 2nd inning when Kristen Gill hit a line drive right up the middle that hit Freedom's pitcher in the leg, forcing her to leave the game with an injury.The Pioneers took advantage of 17 walks. Gill got the win in game two. She also helped her own cause with a single, a double, scored twice and drove in three runs; Katie Replogle had a base hit, scored twice and drove in four runs;
Shelby Winebarger tripled, scored three times and drove in a run; and Rachel Cox had a single, a double and scored two runs.

 


NORTHERN PACES WHS GOLFERS AT ORCHARD HILLS

 


Austin Northern fired a seven over par 79 and finished seven shots back on Monday at Orchard Hills Golf Club in Lenior. Alex Rhyne of Alexander Central captured medalist honors for the second week in a row as he fired an even par 72.
Hickory won the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference meet with a team score of 305. Hibriten finished 12 shots back with a 317; Alexander Central and South Caldwell tied for third. Each team had a 318.
Senior Matt Byrum supported Northern's effort with an 84; Cameron Taylor had an 85; Troy McNeil had a 90. The Pioneers travel to Catawba Springs Country Club next Tuesday, April 3. St. Stephens will be the home team.
