On the strength of tossing the Southern Conference’s first nine-inning shutout of the season, Appalachian State University’s Seth Grant (Etowah, N.C./West Henderson) has been named the

SoCon Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Grant went the distance in Saturday’s 5-0 win at Elon. The right-handed senior retired 25 of the 31 batters he faced, allowing just five hits and a walk. After two of Elon’s first three hitters reached base in the bottom of the first inning, Grant got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and went on to sit down 11 in a row. After throwing 26 pitches in the first inning, he needed just 91 to work the final eight stanzas and only one Phoenix runner reached scoring position after the opening frame.
Grant finished with four strikeouts in the second complete-game shutout of his career. He also blanked Furman, 5-0, during last year’s SoCon Tournament. With the gem, Grant moved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.72 on the campaign. The SoCon honor is the first of his career.
Appalachian (18-5, 7-2 SoCon) begins a four-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts North Carolina A&T. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at ASU’s Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium. Tuesday’s contest can be watched FREE as special GoASU TV free preview. Live coverage begins at 2:55 pm at GoASU.com.
