The fifth-ranked Catawba College Baseball Team (24-7, 15-1) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a 5-3 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (9-24, 5-11) Friday night at Bears Field. The start of the game was delayed over two hours because of rain. Catawba's Ross Whitley (Mooresville, N.C.) (5-2) allowed just one run

in five innings of work en route to the win while Ethan Satterfield (Madison, N.C.) finished with three hits and two runs scored as the Indians remained in sole possession of first place in the league standings. Lenoir-Rhyne senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) also finished with three hits and drove in a run despite the loss for the Bears.
The Indians' Greg Lawson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, N.C.) each drove in a run in the second and third innings, respectively, as Catawba took a 2-0 lead and would never trail in the contest.
The Bears, who suffered their second straight setback, would cut the margin to one run on two occasions at 2-1 and 3-2 but the Indians were able to hold on for the win.
Sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) added two hits and two runs scored and junior Christian Hicks (Charlotte, N.C.) (1-3) suffered the loss despite striking out a career-high 12 batters for the Bears as well.
Catawba's John Tuttle (Kannapolis, N.C.) pitched the ninth inning en route to his second save of the season. Tuttle registered the final out with two runners on base.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Bears Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
