The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (29-10, 5-3) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Wingate (19-15, 3-3) Wednesday afternoon at the Wingate Softball Complex.  The Bears prevailed

in the first contest, 2-0, before falling in the second game by an 8-3 score.
In the opener, Senior pitcher Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) threw a one-hit shutout, her eighth of the year, to go along with a two strikeouts in leading the Bears to the win. Lenoir-Rhyne opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning on freshman outfielder Marie Mauhar's (Mills River, N.C.) RBI double.
The Bears added a second run in the top of the seventh when senior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) scored on the Bulldogs' fifth and final error of the contest. Wingate's Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) suffered the loss on the mound despite allowing just one earned run in the contest.
In game two, Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) and Joya Wortham (Creedmour, N.C.) each hit a home run to lead Wingate to the victory and the doubleheader split as the Bulldogs snapped the Bears' seven-game winning streak. Loudermilt hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 lead but L-R tied the contest at two when junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) connected on a solo home run, her team-leading 10th of the year, in the top of the fourth.
However, Wingate took the lead for good in its half of the fourth when Brittany Owens (Greenville, N.C.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice as part of a two-run frame. Wortham added a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Paul (15-14) was credited with the win for the Bulldogs.
Fellmeth led Lenoir-Rhyne with two hits and two runs batted in while Millwood (18-5) suffered the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains on the road Saturday when the Bears travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., to take on Carson-Newman in a league doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Wingate hosts league-rival Newberry on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., in a doubleheader.
