On a day when jumps in joblessness were reported, a job fair was held at the Boone National guard Armory, well attended by those seeking employment.  Local and regional firms talked with job seekers and took applications, looking for employees for a range of jobs from healthcare to car rental to plumbing and electrical work— the latter two categories surprisingly sought by Google, according to Jon Rogers of the Lenoir server farm, “Google’s always on the lookout for qualified individuals to work in their data centers.  What people don’t tend to realize is that besides the obvious software engineers and hardware engineers, Google also employs a great number of tradesmen to include HVAC, heating and air conditioning, mechanics, generator mechanics, and electricians.” And Rogers said they’re particularly seeking veterans, “We wanted to come to this job fair because we’ve had a lot of success hiring military veterans. For example, when you’re dealing with someone who knows how to tear down a 7000 per gallon per minute pump, you’ll find a lot o those people came from the Navy.” Jobless rates jumped in the High Country and across the state in January figures released late Monday—double digit rates in Ashe and Avery, just under 10% in Watauga.  Unemployment increased in 95 of NC’s 100 counties in January.
