Will Callaway (Greenville, S.C./Eastside), who hit .522 with two home runs, five doubles and eight RBI to help lead Appalachian State University baseball to a 4-1 record last week, has been tabbed as the

Southern Conference’s Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Callaway was 12-for-23 at the plate in five games last week. He hit safely in all five contests and had four multi-hit games while recording at least one RBI and one run scored in four of the five outings.
After going 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base in Tuesday’s 6-3 win at Duke and hitting a three-run homer in Wednesday’s narrow 6-4 defeat at No. 3 South Carolina, Callaway led Appalachian to its first-ever three-game series sweep over The Citadel by hitting .643 (9-for-14) versus the Bulldogs.
The junior shortstop had multiple hits and at least one double and one RBI in all three games versus The Citadel. He capped the outstanding week by going a career-best 4-for-5 with two doubles, his second home run of the season, two RBI and three runs scored in Sunday’s 7-6 victory that sealed the historic sweep for the Mountaineers.
The conference recognition is a career first for Callaway, who leads Appalachian with a .405 batting average on the season and is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak. ASU’s red-hot No. 3 hitter has multiple hits in 10 of the last 15 ballgames.
Callaway and the Mountaineers (17-3, 6-0 SoCon) return to action on Tuesday evening at High Point (13-9, 0-0 Big South). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at HPU’s Williard Stadium.
