The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (28-9, 4-2) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Newberry (13-10, 0-6), 3-1 and 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.  On the day, the Bears hit four home runs and increased their winning streak to six games. In the opener, senior catcher

Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winning, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Bears to the victory. Lenoir-Rhyne tied the contest at one on a solo home run from junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) in the bottom of the second.  Both Atkins and Fellmeth finished with two hits and are now tied for the team lead in home runs this season with nine.
Newberry scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.). L-R senior pitcher Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) allowed just one run while striking out eight batters in the complete game win.  Newberry's Caitlyn Smith (Palm Harbor, Fla.) (4-4) suffered the loss.
In game two, both senior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) and sophomore third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) hit home runs to lead the Bears to the win and the sweep. Carpenter's home run and an RBI double by Fellmeth gave the Bears a 2-1 advantage after one inning of play and a lead they would not relinquish.
Jarman pushed Lenoir-Rhyne's advantage to 4-1 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning and the two teams then traded runs to make it a 5-2 final.  Jarman finished with a game-high three runs batted in to lead the Bears. Freshman designated player Katie Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) added three hits while Millwood (17-4) picked up the win again on the mound for Lenoir-Rhyne.  Millwood allowed just two unearned runs while striking out five in the victory.
Newberry's Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) each drove in a run and Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) fell to 3-6 with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday when it faces Wingate in a doubleheader on the road beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Newberry plays King in Bristol, Tenn., on Monday in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
