Lenoir-Rhyne (9-23, 5-10) and Anderson (8-21, 3-12) split a South Atlantic Conference Baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Bears won the first contest by a 10-6 score but the Trojans prevailed in the nightcap, 9-8. In game one, L-R junior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.)
drove in four runs as the Bears jumped out to a 10-1 lead and held off a late Anderson rally to take the win. After each squad scored a run in the first inning, the Bears reeled off nine consecutive runs including a four-run second inning aided by a pair of Trojan errors.
Robinson delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning before Anderson cut the margin to 10-6 with a five-run seventh inning but the Trojans couldn't get any closer.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) also drove in three runs while junior first baseman Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.) added three hits including a pair of doubles and three runs scored in the victory.
On the mound, L-R junior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) improved to 3-2 with the win while Anderson's Landon Beck (Hartwell, Ga.) fell to 1-5 with the loss.
The Trojans were led offensively by Paul Como (Missouri City, Texas) with three hits and two runs batted in.
In the night cap, the Trojans jumped out to a 7-2 lead after two innings of play then won the contest in the seventh on an RBI single by Ryan Kirkland (Loganville, Ga.).
The Bears had tied the game at eight in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run from Hansley before the Trojans prevailed in the bottom half of the frame to salvage the split.
Hansley and freshman third baseman Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) each drove in three runs in the losing effort for the Bears. Hansley also scored three times for the second straight game.
For Anderson, Brett Scarberry (Sunrise, Fla.) finished four-for-four with three RBI while Kirkland added three hits and three runs batted in as well. The Trojans' Erick Sanderson (Hanahan, S.C.) (1-4) went the distance for his first win of the year while sophomore Aaron Bentley (Lenoir, N.C.) fell to 1-1 with the defeat.
