On what was primarily a disappointing day for the Appalachian State University wrestling team, Austin Trotman of the Mountaineers advanced to the national quarterfinals on the opening day of the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, MO. Trotman,

a No.9 seed and a four-time national qualifier, defeated McKain Stoll of North Dakota State 13-6 in his first-round match.
He takes on Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa in the national quarters later tonight. Loder advanced with a 2-1 win against Grant Gambrall of Iowa. Unfortunately, Trotman was the only bright spot of the day for the Mountaineers. Kyle Blevins, Tony Gravely and Mike Kessler all lost their first-round matches.
Blevins, the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year, who received an at-large bid to nationals, suffered a 5-2 setback in his opening match against Michael Evans of Iowa at 165 pounds. Blevins takes on Scott Winston of Rutgers in the wrestle-back round; Kessler, a SoCon champion at 141 pounds, dropped a 1-0 decision to Nick Nelson of Virginia. Kessler takes on Jake Sueflon of Nebraska in the wrestle-back round tonight; and Tony Gravely lost by technical fall to Jonathan Morrison of Oklahoma State in the opening round. Gravely takes on Austin Miller of Bucknell in the wrestle-back round later tonight.
