It's been a topsy-turvy year for Boone native Shelby Drummonds. The former Watauga High Pioneer, currently a freshman at Salem College in Winston-Salem, has gone through the ups-and-downs during her freshman year at the collegiate level. But Drummonds, who was a

two-time all-conference performer and was all-state during her junior year at WHS, came through with a masterful performance Wednesday afternoon. Drummonds went the distance and led Salem to a 4-3 win over Guilford College and a split of their double-header. Guilford won the opener, 11-2.
Salem scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. Drummonds (2-5) gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in picking up the complete-game victory. She also helped her own cause with a base hit and an RBI.
