After allowing just one run over the first two appearances of his Appalachian State University career, pitcher Rob Marcello (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) was named the Southern Conference’s February Pitcher of the

Month on Tuesday. A transfer from Indian River (Fla.) State College, Marcello went 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA over 13.1 innings for the Mountaineers in February. He allowed just five hits while striking out nine and walking only two in 13.1 innings of work.
The southpaw opened his ASU career with five scoreless innings in a 4-1 win over Akron on Feb. 18. He surrendered two hits and struck out five in the victory.
However, Marcello truly established his presence as a Division I hurler on Feb. 26 at LSU, when he shut out the seventh-ranked Tigers for 8.1 innings in a series-clinching 11-1 Mountaineer victory. He allowed just three hits and struck out four before leaving the contest with a runner on base and one out in the ninth. The runner wound up coming around to score after Marcello departed the game for the only run charged against the lefty in his first two appearances in Black and Gold.
For the season, Marcello is 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA and .147 opponents’ batting average in four starts.
