The Watauga High softball team picked up its biggest win of the season on Satruday as the Pioneers blasted West Wilkes 14-3 in five innings in Millers Creek. The Blackhawks were

ranked seventh in the state in the Class 1A North Carolina Softball Coaches Association Poll.
The Pioneers (2-3) belted three home runs. Riley Pudney led the offensive charge with her first home run of the season, two doubles, a walk, two runs scored and two runs-batted-in; Elizabeth Dollar had three hits, including a double and four RBI; Michala McCune and Hope LaPointe both hit their first career home runs; Taylor Drummonds had two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored; Kim Robinson had two hits and scored a run; Haley Leonard and Nicole Dollar each had a single.
Robinson picked up the win. She went four innings, gave up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. McCune finished up with a scoreless inning of relief. The Pioneers play their home opener today against Ashe County. The varsity game begins at 4:30 p.m.; the JV game will follow. Alexander Central comes to town Wednesday. Fred T. Foard beat the Cougars 9-1 Friday night.




The Watauga High men's lacrossse team captured its first win of the year Saturday by knocking off Mooresville, 9-3. Canyon Mueller led the scoring assault with three goals. Nick Williams had two, Dominick Hamilton and Fred Siegmond each had a goal and an assist. Adam Lambert scored a goal.  The Pioneers (1-1) travel to Patton Tuesday night.
