The No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (21-8) split a doubleheader with UNC Pembroke (11-16) on Sunday afternoon at Bears Field. The Bears won the first game by a 7-0 score but the Braves responded
with a victory in the nightcap, 7-3.
In the opener, L-R junior designated player Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) hit a three-run home-run, her team-leading eighth of the season, while senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) threw a four-hit shutout to lead the Bears to the win.
Millwood improved to 11-4 on the season as she struck out three batters en route to her sixth shutout of the year.
Fellmeth, who finished with a game-high four runs batted in, staked Lenoir-Rhyne to a 3-0 lead with her three-run home run in the first inning.
L-R put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted by a two-run triple from sophomore third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.).
Jarman finished with three hits and two runs batted in while UNC Pembroke's Starr Gilley (Graham, N.C.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Braves.
In game two, The Braves broke the game open with five-run third inning keyed by two-run hits from Brea Hartley (Lexington, N.C.) and Kristen Hobbs (Granite Falls, N.C.) as UNC Pembroke salvaged the split.
Jarman hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Bears, who were limited to just four hits in the contest.
Gilley (5-8) was credited with the win as she pitched the last four innings while junior Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) fell to 6-3 after being saddled with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Shepherd (W.Va.) on Monday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. UNC Pembroke next travels to Greenwood, S.C., to face league-foe Lander on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
