Watauga High senior Jake Pifer closed out his high-school career by being named to the Northwestern 3A/4A All-Conference team. He was the only all-conference selection for a Pioneers (10-15) team that registered its first losing record in four years (2008-09). Pifer, who has yet to sign his National Letter of Intent

to play college basketball next season, led WHS in scoring with a 19.4 points-per-game average. And Pifer, who scored 895 points in his WHS career, is ranked fifth all-time in scoring. He also averaged nearly six rebounds, two assists and three steals a game. Pifer scored 25 points in his final game against East Gaston in the opening round of the state playoffs. Pifer errupted for 23 points in the second half and nearly rallied the Pioneers from a 20-point deficit.
Matt Proffitt of the Pioneers was named Honorable Mention in his only season as a varsity basketball player. Proffitt averaged nine points and ten rebounds a game. He also averaged two assists and two steals an outing. Ed Wills of Alexander Central was named the Coach of the Year; Alek Ayer of the Cougars was named the Player of the Year.
The Cougars and Hickory, who shared the regular-season championship, each had three players chosen apiece to the all-conference squad. Ayer, Tyler Crouch and Cameron Gant represented the Cougars; Jalen Byrd, Zach Jarrett and Raheim Connelly represented the Red Tornadoes. Hickory, which defeated Alexander Central in the NW3A/4A Tournament championship game, lost to Rocky Mount in the Class 3A state championship game Saturday night.
