After a relatively slow start at the plate, Appalachian has come around offensively over the past week. Leading a slew of Mountaineers swinging hot bats is catcher Jeremy Dowdy, who has four multi-hit efforts

and 12 RBI in the last six games. Late on Wednesday, the senior, who has reached base in all 11 games that he's played this season and has thrown out a spectacular 60 percent of would-be base-stealers, was named to the official watch list for the Johnny Bench Award. Dowdy is one of 43 players nationwide on the watch list for the Bench Award, which is given annually to college baseball's top catcher.
For the season, Dowdy, a senior who played at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, is batting .390 with 16 hits, five doubles, a home run and 13 runs-batted-in. In a double-header sweep of Rider on March 3, Dowdy had six hits, including three doubles, he scored four runs and drove in seven runs.
The Mountaineers (10-2), riding an eight-game winning streak, begin Southern Conference play this afternoon at home against Davidson. Our coverage begins at 2:40 p.m. this afternoon on AM 1450, WATA.
