The Ashe County Board of Education heard a presentation by Mr. Roman Gabriel III on a program he has developed called, “Sold Out Drug and Alcohol Awareness Program”. During his presentation he shared that his program is designed to fill the void left due to reduced funding in programs such as DARE

and other drug and alcohol prevention programs, working with existing programs in the schools. The semester assemblies he referred to would bring positive roll models from the fields of sports, military, entertainment, etc. who have set goals and overcome hardships to succeed to present their stories to the students. Another aspect of the Sold Out program is reaching students with positive messages through social media. He shared the Sold Out facebook page with the Board during his presentation. Mr. Gabriel estimates it would take approximately $150,000 to implement this program in Ashe, Watauga, and Avery counties and is willing to raise the money for it by writing grants and seeking donations. He is currently seeking permission from the Boards of Education in all three counties to begin planning and implementation of the program. Superintendent Reeves and the School Board thanked Mr. Gabriel for the information he had provided. They will make a decision about implementation of the program during a future meeting.
