The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams broke several school records Saturday at the 2012 PowerSox Invitational, the first of two outdoor meets the Bears will host this season, at the Irwin Belk Track as part of the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex. In the men's and women's
one-mile race, sophomore Aaron Nelson (Mayodan, N.C.) and senior Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) finished with times of 4:28.57 and 5:03.20, respectively. Both were school records while Griewisch placed first and was 20 seconds better than her nearest competitor.
In the women's javelin throw, Lenoir-Rhyne junior Samantha Levine (Wayne, N.J.) won the event with a school-record toss of 122'08".
Lenoir-Rhyne also won the men's 400-meter relay with a time of 42.28. The relay squad consisted of freshman Derrick Hardin (Dallas, Ga.), senior James Pone (Wilson, N.C.), junior Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) and freshman Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.).
Gilmore also won the men's triple jump with a 45'7.75" while freshman Mike Fields (Greensboro, N.C.) finished second in the men's discus throw with a 122'00".
Griewisch will next compete in the women's 5,000-meter finals at the 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Mankota, Minnesota, at the Myers Field House. Minnesota State University, Mankato is serving as the host institution.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams will compete again at the VertlKlasse Meeting in High Point, North Carolina, on Saturday, March 24.
