Lenoir-Rhyne (5-18, 2-7) and Wingate (10-11, 2-7) split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bears Field. The Bears won the first game by an 8-3 score while the Bulldogs won the second contest, 8-6, to

salvage the split. In game one, Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Wingate, 8-3. L-R freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) finished with three hits and hit a two-run home run to lead the Bears to the win. Vieitez's two-run round-tripper, his team-leading fourth of the season, capped off a three-run first inning for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) pushed Lenoir-Rhyne's lead to 5-0 with a two-run double in the second frame. Gasque finished with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI for the Bears as well in the win.
Wingate cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) improved to 2-2 on the season after limiting Wingate to just two runs over six innings while striking out four batters.
For Wingate, Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs and Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) fell to 1-2 with the loss.
In game two, Wingate bounced back and defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 8-6. The Bulldogs' Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) broke a six-all tie with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to lift Wingate to the victory and helped the visitors salvage the split.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which fell behind by four runs, took a 5-4 lead with a four-run third inning highlighted by a two-run double from junior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.) and an RBI triple by Vieitez. Vieitez finished with two triples on the day.
L-R tied the game at six on a run-scoring single by senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) in the sixth inning before Allison's game-winning hit in the seventh.
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) also drove in two runs while Joshua Karr (Richmond, Va.) (1-0) was credited with the victory for Wingate. Vieitez, however, was tagged with the defeat and fell to 0-1 on the year for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m. Wingate faces Francis Marion on Tuesday in Florence, S.C., at 6:00 p.m.
