The Wingate Baseball Team (9-10, 1-6) picked up its first league victory of the season with a 15-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne (4-17, 1-6) Friday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Bears Field. Wingate's Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) hit a
three-run home run and drove in eight runs as the Bulldogs prevailed in the opening contest of the weekend series.
Allison got things going for the Bulldogs in the top of the first inning with a three-run round-tripper with two outs.
Allison then helped Wingate put the game away with a bases-clearing double as part of a five-run second inning as the Bulldogs surged to an 8-0 advantage.
Allison added a two-run double in fourth inning as Wingate led 12-0 before Lenoir-Rhyne plated its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a run-scoring fielder's choice by freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.). The play scored L-R senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.).
Lenoir-Rhyne was also hurt by five errors which led to nine unearned runs on the evening for Wingate.
Allison finished with three hits while Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) added two hits and two runs scored for the Bulldogs, who defeated the Bears for the second time this season.
Wingate's Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) improved to 2-2 on the season after limiting Lenoir-Rhyne to just three hits over seven innings of work in addition to three strikeouts. L-R junior Ryan Reedy (Clearwater, Fla.) fell to 0-4 after suffering the loss.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m., at Bears Field. The game was pushed back an hour due to the threat of severe weather very early in the day.
