The Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Team (4-16) split a doubleheader with Barton College (5-11) Wednesday afternoon at McCrary Park in a neutral site contest. L-R won the first contest,
13-4, but Barton prevailed in the nightcap, 7-5.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 13, Barton 4 (seven innings) Junior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.) hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs while freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) added a home run and four RBI to lead the Bears to the win.
L-R took control early with four runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by Vieitez's two-run double.
Vieitez then added a two-run round-tripper in the third inning and Lenoir-Rhyne raced to a 7-0 lead before Barton got on the board.
The Bulldogs plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the margin to 7-4 but the Bears scored the game's final six runs capped off by a three-run home run from Robinson in the seventh inning.
L-R sophomore Christian Hicks (Charlotte, N.C.) (1-1) was credited with the win after pitching four scoreless innings and striking out six batters while Barton's Duncan Everett (Greensboro, N.C.) fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Aaron Bentley (Lenoir, N.C.) held Barton without a run for the final three innings for his first save of the year.
Game Two - Barton 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 5 (seven innings)
The Bulldogs' Zac Crumpler (Wilson, N.C.) broke a five-all tie with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning as Barton was able to salvage the split.
Barton's Ryan Daughtry (Princeton, N.C.) hit a lead-off home run and finished with three hits and three runs batted in as Barton rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take the win.
L-R sophomore third baseman Walton Shepherd (Lake Junaluska, N.C.) hit his second home run in as many games and Vieitez and freshman catcher Matt Rose (Charlotte, N.C.) each drove in two runs despite the loss.
Jimmie Davis (Elizabethtown, N.C.) (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for Barton while Phillip Williams (Gibson, N.C.) was credited with his third save of the season. Williams also hit a two-run home run for the Bulldogs. L-R senior Blake Edmonson (Newton, N.C.) fell to 0-2 after being tagged with the loss.
L-R returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when it hosts Wingate beginning at 6:00 p.m., at Bears Field. Barton hosts Mount Olive Friday at 2:00 p.m.
No. 3 Limestone Routes Lenoir-Rhyne, 15-4
The Limestone Men's Lacrosse Team (4-0), ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, remained undefeated on the season with a 15-4 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (0-4) Wednesday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.
Limestone's Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA) led all scorers with five goals while Jackson Decker (Port Moody, British Columbia, CANADA) added four goals to lead the Saints to the win.
Four different players scored for Lenoir-Rhyne, including redshirt freshman Connor Squires (Lawrenceville, Ga.) with a goal and an assist, in the loss.
The Saints were in control throughout the match as they raced to a 9-0 lead before the Bears got on the board when Squires scored with one minute remaining in the first half.
In addition, Limestone held the advantage in shots taken (41-31) and ground balls (34-28) on the afternoon.
Limestone goalkeeper Steve Gartelman (Seaford, N.Y.) was credited with the win as he stopped five shots while L-R senior goalkeeper Patrick Stasio (Williamsville, N.Y.) suffered the loss.
Meanwhile, Lenoir-Rhyne's reserve goalkeeper, freshman Alex Squires (Lawrenceville, Ga.), tallied 11 saves during the contest as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne hits the road for its first away match of the season when it travels to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Shorter Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Walton High School. Limestone returns home to host Saint Leo on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., as well.
