Individuals Shine at Irish Creek Tourney PDF Print

Lance Wheeler carded a 75-67=142 (E) to tie for third place and lead five Appalachian State University men’s golfers at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. The Mountaineers did not enter a team but posted a strong showing among five individual players. The senior’s 67 on Tuesday was a career low and tied for the fifth-lowest round in Appalachian history. Wheeler’s previous best

was a 68 in the 2008 Sea Trail Invitational. His 36-hole total of 142 ties him with former teammate Jacob Eggers for the fourth-lowest tournament total as well.
Eric Eberspeaker also had a strong second day with a 75-70=145 (+3) to place seventh, just one stroke ahead of teammate Josh Nichols, who shot a 73-73=146 (+5) to tie for eighth place.Drew Harris tied for 27th place with a 74-78=152 (+10) and Daniel Walsh carded a 72-81=153 (+11) to end the competition in 31st place.
Charlotte’s Joe Toland won the individual medal with a 70-70=140 (-2) and host Pfeiffer came away with the team title at 291-289=580 (+12). Queens University finished second, 10 strokes behind. The Mountaineers host Western Carolina in the annual co-ed University Cup on Wednesday at Morganton, N.C.’s Mimosa Hills Country Club.

 


Curcio Inks Four Student-Athletes for 2012

 


Four student-athletes signed a National Letter of Intent to join Appalachian State’s cross country and track & field programs on Tuesday, announced by head coach Michael Curcio. The incoming class includes: Shelby Howell (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover), Dana Cox (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek, Caitlyn Colo (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) and Brittany Williams (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin).
“We are very excited with the first group of commitments for ASu’s class of 2016.  We are looking to this group to come in and help push us back up onto the podium at the SoCon championships.” noted Coach Curcio.

 


Shelby Howell, Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover
State champion in the 800-meters last spring with a personal best time of 2:13.05 … finished first at the East Regional in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:07.79 last May … was a three-time conference champion and four-time county champion in cross country … earned a first-place finish in the NCHSAA 4A East Regional last fall and placed 19th at the state meet.
Coach Curcio Comment: “Shelby is very talented and versatile. She has range from the 800-meter up through the  5000-meter in cross country, and will  looked to step in and fill some big shoes of  Asia Dunlap in the 800-meter and Hannah Orders in cross country.”

 


Dana Cox, Cary, N.C./Panther Creek
Earned a 69th-place finish at the Foot Locker South Regionals as a senior … finished in 13th-place at the state meet last fall … placed in fifth in the 3,200-meter at the 4A NCHSAA Indoor State Championship as a senior.
Coach Curcio Comment: “Dana has been to ASU camps these past two summers and has really helped put Panther Creek on the map in North Carolina cross country.  She has really shown progress  during her senior year, and will be great addition in cross country and in the distance events on the track.”

 


Caitlyn Colo, Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge
Finished in 65th at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional with a time of 19:49.90 … placed in 11th at the North Carolina state meet last fall … earned an eight-place finish in the 1,600-meters and 13th in the 3,2000m at the 1A/2A/3A NCHSAA Indoor State Championship.
Coach Curcio Comment:  “Caitlyn verbally committed early, and just fell in love with the mountains.  She will definitely add to an already deep squad. The Wawhaw, N.C. native has all-state accolades in cross country and we feel she will develop into a fine Mountaineer.”

 


Brittany Williams, Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin
Member of the 2011 SC Upper State Cross Country Championship team and finished runner-up in the Region II AAAA Cross Country Region … finished third in the 3,200-meters and eight in the 4x800-meter relay at the state championships as a junior … earned all-state honors as a junior in cross country.
Coach Curcio Comment: “Brittany is someone we feel can step right in with our program and not miss a beat.  She has been a consistent sub-19  performer in the 5k in cross country on multiple courses.”
