The Brevard College Baseball Team (6-7, 3-2) swept a doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne University (3-14, 1-4), 8-1 and 14-1, Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at Gil Coan Field. Game One - Brevard 8, Lenoir-Rhyne 1: Cody Queen (Chesapeake, Va.) hit two home runs to go along with
four hits and a pair of runs batted in to lead Brevard to the victory in the opening contest of the doubleheader. Queen gave Brevard the lead for good with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning before Tornados' Champ Stuart (Freeport, BAHAMAS) hit a solo shot to lead off the second as Brevard built a 4-0 advantage before Lenoir-Rhyne pushed a run across the plate.
L-R junior designated hitter Will Whitty (Springfield, Va.) drove in the Bears' only run in the top of the sixth inning with a run-scoring double. Stuart, who finished with three RBI on the day, closed out the scoring with a two-run single as part of a Brevard three-run seventh inning.
The Tornados' Johnathan Chaplain (Black Mountain, N.C.) improved to 1-1 after picking up the win on the mound. Chaplain limited L-R to just one run over six innings to go along with seven strikeouts. Lenoir-Rhyne junior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) fell to 1-2 after suffering the loss.
Game Two - Brevard 14, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
The Tornados exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a close contest and sweep the doubleheader from the Bears. Two-run doubles by Kramer Clark (Candler, N.C.) and Christian Christopoulos (Raleigh, N.C.) highlighted the frame. Clark finished with four runs batted in and Zach Merriken (Hudson, N.C.) added four hits to lead Brevard's 15-hit attack.
Junior shortstop Dalton Hall (Hickory, N.C.) hit his first home run of the season to tie the game at one in the top of the fifth before Brevard's 11-run frame. Brevard's Dylan Lee (Georgetown, S.C.) improved to 2-1 on the year after being credited with the win while L-R sophomore Ryan Jones (Asheville, N.C.) (2-3) suffered the loss.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
