Josh Wineberg of the Ashe County wrestling team marched his way to the Class 2A state championship match in the heavyweight division late Friday with a 4-3 overtime win against Kyle Eiss of Piedmont. Wineberg (44-1) takes on Josh White of East Davidson in the finals on Saturday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. White advanced as he won his semifinal match by pinfall. He pinned

Matthew Smith of Providence Grove in 2;59. Michael Elliott wasn't as fortunate. He dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Billy Simmons of Trinity in his semifinal match at 132 pounds. Elliott (43-9) takes on Ribyan McClain of Carver in a third-place semifinal match. Elliott defeated McClain 9-3 in the opening round Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the drought continues for the Watauga High wrestling team. Demetre Kostis (39-8) at 132 pounds, who was aiming his sights on becoming WHS's first place finisher at the state tournament in four years (2008), came up short in his bid late Friday night. Kostis dropped a 6-3 decision to William Scott of West Forsyth in a consolation match.
