Coffey, Kostis Advance At States PDF Print

The Watauga High wrestling team picked up a pair of victories on the opening day of the Class 4A state wrestling championships at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. Gus Coffey at 113 pounds, and Demetre Kostis at 132 both won by decision in their respective matches. Coffey (28-4),

who finished fourth at regionals last week, defeated Victor Sosa of Wilmington-Ashley 9-3 in his first-round match. He will face Robbie Tomasic (42-3) of Jordan in a second-round match today. Kostis (38-6) defeated Robert Council of Purnell Swett 6-0 in his first-round match. He will take on Terrance Moore (44-6) of Jordan in a second-round match today.
Mark Townsend (27-11) lost his first-round match at 106 pounds. He lost by pinfall (in 1:29) to Chris Kimmerly of Leesville-Road. Townsend will take on Reggie Turman (35-11) of Greensboro Dudley in a consolation match today. Turman lost to Ivan Enriquez of Pinecrest by pinfall in the opening round.
Team-wise the Pioneers are tied for 29th after the opening day of competition. Pinecrest leads the standings with 23 points; T.C. Roberson is in second place with 16 points.
In Class 2A, Ashe County had a productive day on the first day of competition. Micheal Elliott (42-8) defeated Ribyan McClain of Carver 9-3 at 132 pounds in the opening round. He goes up against Clay Alguire of West Lincoln in the second round; Dakota Elliott of Ashe County defeated Zach Houston of North Henderson by pinfall in his first-round match at 138 pounds. Elliott (33-11) won the match in 4:52. He now faces Casey Bruce of Trinity in the second round. And Josh Wineburg won his first-round match in the heavyweight division by defeating Demarcus Whitehurst of North Pitt by major decision. Wineburg (41-1), who has lost once all year, won the match 14-3. He takes on Jose Garcia of Owen in the second round.
Lucas Miller (33-14) of the Huskies lost by forfeit at 170 pounds. He was injuried and could not complete his match Thursday nigth; William Miller (25-9), who was injuried as well, lost by pinfall (in 1:18) to Alex Jones of Beddington in the opening round at 182. William Miller is scheduled to take on Trevor Hoyle of East Burke in a consolation match today; Lucas Miller is scheduled to take on Andrew Colburn of Croatan. Lucas Miller, based on the nature of his injury, is doubtful for Friday; William Miller, based on the nature of his injury, is probable.
Team-wise, the Huskies are 12th with nine points. The finals will be held on Saturday. The Class 1A tournament begins Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
