Appalachian State University women’s golf opened the spring campaign with a second-place finish at the Wofford Tri-Match. The Mountaineers carded a one-round total of 328 (+40) to edge out Gardner-Webb by
one stroke on Tuesday.
Rumbidzai Masamvu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) led Appalachian with a 77 (+5) to tie for third place. Classmate Yue Xu (Beijing, China/HuiJia Private School) finished close behind in fifth place at 78 (+6).
Xu was matched by freshman Elena Thomas (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie), who competed as an individual and carded a solid 78 of her own.
Lauren Smith (Salisbury, N.C./UNCG) placed 11th at 83 (+11) and Mimi Burke (Mooresville, N.C./The Cannon School) turned in a 90 (+18) for 18th place.
Brittany Zachrich (Hickory, N.C./Montreat) shot a 95 (+23) to place 21st and Samantha Patton (Morganton, N.C./Mars Hill) rounded out the group with a 103 (+31) to place 21st.
Wofford took home the title at 314 (+26) as Alex Hendricks (75) and Lauren Dunbar (76) took home the top two places at the event.
Gardner-Webb carded a 329 (+41) and was led by Meghan Allen, who tied Masamvu in third place.
The Apps return to the course on Feb. 29 at the University Cup in Morganton, N.C. The annual co-ed competition against Western Carolina tees off at the Mimosa Hills Country Club.
