Appalachian State University wrestler Carter Downs (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian) has been named the Southern Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Downs posted

a 2-0 week as the Mountaineers won both of their duals last week to capture the Southern Conference Championship after an undefeated 6-0 conference slate. It was the first time Appalachian State went undefeated in conference action since the 2002-03 season.
The senior from Jupiter, Fla., fell a single point shy of bonus points, when he recorded an 12-5 decision over Duke’s Randy Roden. He also picked up a 11-3 decision over Davidson’s Ian Solcz. Down’s performance helped seal a 39-10 win over the Wildcats and remain perfect in the league.
Downs maintains a 3.79 GPA with a major in political science and minor in criminal justice. He was also named to the winter 2010-11 Academic All-Southern Conference team.
