The Watauga High wrestling team had three wrestlers produced three state qualifiers on Saturday at the Class 4A Western Regional in Charlotte. Mark Townsend finished third at 106 pounds; Demetre Kostis finished third at 132, and Gus Coffey finished fourth at 113. Townsend defeated Conner Kominek of

Lake Norman by pinfall (in 3:38); Kostis defeated Akio Fujiwara of Ardey Kell 7-5 in triple overtime. Coffey lost by pinfall (in 4:59) to Austin Randall of Hopewell and finished fourth.
"It was a tough weekend," said WHS coach Todd Allan. "We had two guys in semifinals, it really should of been three. We had a cuple of guys take third, and one guy finished fourth. It should of been two second place finishes and a third. But the boys were in some battles and came out doing well."
The state finals begin Thursday, February 23 in Greensboro. The finals will be held on Saturday, February 25.
T.C.Roberson won the regional championship with 158.5 points; Alexander Cental finished ninth with 61.5 points; South Caldwell finished tenth with 61 points. The Pioneers were 16th with 43 points. John Grigg of East Gaston at 132 pounds was named the regional's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
