The Watauga High wrestling team had three of its wrestlers advance to the quarter-final round on Friday night in the opening-round of the Class 4A Western Regional at Hough High School in Charlotte. Mark Townsend at 106 pounds, Gus Coffey at 113, and Demetre Kostis at 132 all won their first-round matches. Townsend (23-9), who was seeded fifth at 106, defeated Justin Wright of T.C. Roberson, 7-3;

Coffey (25-3), who was seeded second at 113, pinned Nazar Porter of Charlotte Vance in 1:28; Kostis (34-5), who was seeded second at 132, pinned Waddell McNeeley of Mallard Creek in 5:47.
Regional competition wraps up today; the top four finishers in each weight class advances to state. Gab Irwin and Jeremy Critcher were not as fortuate. Neither man was seeded in their respective weight classes. Irwin, at 152 pounds, lost both of his matches on the first day of competition. Irwin lost to Jordan Thompson of Hough by pinfall (1:50), and he was eliminated by Jeremy Anderson of TCR by pinfall in 2:57.
Critcher, at 195 pounds, suffered a similar fate. He lost by pinfall to Coburn Burroughs of TCR in 0:44 seconds; he lost to Christian York of Hough by pinfall in 1:49.
