The ninth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (7-1) swept a doubleheader from Queens (2-6), 4-3 and 17-4, Wednesday afternoon at Park Road Park. In game one, the Bears defeated Queens 4-3 in ten innings. L-R broke a three-all tie in the top of the 10th inning when
junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) scored an unearned run on a Queens error to help the Bears prevail in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Bears opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when sophomore shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) crossed the plate on the passed ball before the Royals scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-1 advantage.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) forced extra innings with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning with two innings that tied the score at two.
Both teams plated single runs in the eighth inning before Lenoir-Rhyne's game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning.
L-R senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) improved to 4-0 on the season after pitching 10 innings and allowing just one earned run to go along with seven strikeouts. Queens' Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla.) fell to 2-2 with the loss despite allowing one earned run and striking out 12 batters.
In game two, Lenoir-Rhyne blasted Queens 17-4 in five innings. Mizelle finished with three hits and five runs batted in as L-R rolled to the win to sweep the doubleheader from Queens. The Bears scored the game's first 11 runs and run-ruled the Royals in five innings en route to the win and the doubleheader sweep.
Mizelle opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning before L-R put the game away with five runs in the top of the third.
Queens cut the lead to 11-4 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth but Lenoir-Rhyne squashed any hopes of a Royals comeback with a six-run fifth inning.
L-R freshman outfielder Marie Mauhar (Mills River, N.C.) and sophomore third baseman Ciera Cockerham (Yadkinville, N.C.) each drove in two runs while junior Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) improved to 3-1 with the victory. Queens' Jessica Scott (Franklin, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss.
LRU Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener
The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Lacrosse Team (0-1) opened the 2012 season with a 10-5 loss to Queens University (1-0) Wednesday evening at the Queens Sports Complex.
Queens' Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high three goals while Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md.) and Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va.) added two goals each to lift the Royals to the win. Casey also assisted on a pair of goal as well.
L-R lost despite two goals from both junior Sarah Minick (Marietta, Ga.), last year's team-leading scorer, and freshman Mary Minick (Marietta, Ga.). Freshman Lauren Donovan (Hollywood, Md.) added a goal for the Bears as well.
Sarah Minick scored twice for Lenoir-Rhyne in the first half as the Bears fell behind a 4-2 score entering halftime.Mary Minick cut the margin to 6-5 with a free position goal at the 20:24 mark of the second half but Queens took over from there by scoring the match's final four goals.The Royals held the advantage in shots taken (36-13) and ground balls (33-26) while Chelsea Lancashire (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) picked up the victory in goal. Lenoir-Rhyne freshman goalkeeper Allison Senft (Marietta, Ga.) took the loss despite stopping 13 shots on the evening.Lenoir-Rhyne takes on Catawba in its home opener on the year Saturday inside Moretz Stadium beginning at Noon. Queens plays at Erskine on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
