Watauga High Athletics Director Tom Wright has announced that tonight's basketball games between the Pioneers and Wilkes Central have been postponed because of inclement weather. "(Wilkes Central) was concerned about coming up the mountain with temperatures falling below freezing tonight," Wright said. "So,

to play it safe, and with this being a non-conference game, we decided to cancel tonight's games."
The Pioneers and Wilkes Central were originally scheduled to play each other on January 3, but those games were snowed out. WHS will close out the regular season Friday night at home against St. Stephens on Senior Night.
The WHS women are currently a No.5 seed and will play at Fred T. Foard in the opening round of the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference tournament next Monday night; the WHS men are currently a No.4 seed. They clinched home-court advantage in the opening-round of the NW3A/4A tournament when Alexander Central defeated South Caldwell Tuesday night.
The Pioneers will play South Caldwell at home next Tuesday night as the No.4 seed, if they lose to St. Stephens Friday night, but if they beat the Indians, they will claim the No.3 seed and play Fred T. Foard at home next Tuesday night. Also, the Pioneers are tied with South Caldwell for the final playoff spot among the Class 4A school in the NW3A/4A conference, which means, if the teams don't play each other in the conference tournament, they might have to play each other in a play-in game, or the team that advances further in the tournament, will earn that automatic state playoff berth. The state playoff pairings will be announced Saturday, February 18; the state playoffs begin Monday, February 20.
Our coverage of WHS-St. Stephens begins at 6 p.m. Friday night on Oldies 100.7 FM.
