Bears Fall Twice To #5 Mount Olive PDF Print

The No. 5 Mount Olive Baseball Team (2-0) swept a doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne (1-2), 9-5 and 7-6, Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field as the Trojans came from behind in both games to prevail.

Game One - Mount Olive 9,  Lenoir-Rhyne 5
The Trojans' Geno Escalante (Fairfield, Calif.) hit a three-run home run and finished with a game-high five runs batted in as Mount Olive rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take the first game of th

 doubleheader. L-R scored four runs in the top of the second inning highlighted by a bases-clearing double from junior shortstop Dalton Hall (Hickory, N.C.) for the 4-1 advantage.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Escalante's three-run home run gave Mount Olive the lead for good.
A run-scoring triple by L-R freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) in the top of the sixth inning cut the lead to 6-5, but Mount Olive scored the final three runs of the contest.
Hall finished with two hits and three RBI while Mike Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) tallied three hits and two runs scored for Mount Olive, who limited Lenoir-Rhyne to just six hits for the game.
On the mound, Jake Moser (Spring Creek, Nev.) (1-0) did not allow an earned run in five innings of work to go along with five strikeouts while L-R sophomore Billy Everding (Fort Myers, Fla.) fell to 0-1 after being tagged with the loss.

 


Game Two - Mount Olive 7,  Lenoir-Rhyne 6 (seven innings)
Lenoir-Rhyne staked itself to a 4-0 lead but Mount Olive once again rallied to win and complete the doubleheader sweep of the Bears.
Vieitez, who finished with a game-high four runs batted in, hit a two-run home run in the second inning and added an RBI single in the third inning to help Lenoir-Rhyne to the early 4-0 advantage.
Mount Olive responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning then took the lead for good with three more in the fifth frame.
The Trojans' Nick Gaeta (Montville, N.J.) led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at four before Jacob Rogers (Clearwater, Fla.) came through with the game-winning RBI single.
Trailing 7-4, the Bears scored twice in the top of the seventh inning capped off by a run-scoring ground out from Vieitez but left two runners on base when the final out was registered.
Mount Olive's Nolan Lancaster (LaGrange, N.C.) (1-0) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball in registering the win while Matt Dillon (Trinity, N.C.) earned the save.  L-R junior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) fell to 0-1 after being tagged with the loss.
The two teams wrap up the three-game weekend series with a single contest on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
