After averaging 14.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game and helping lead Appalachian State University women’s basketball to three league victories, freshman Maryah Sydnor (Radford, Va./Radford) was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week by the

SoCon office on Tuesday.
Sydnor shot 44.4 percent from the field (16-of-36) and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line in wins over Wofford, Chattanooga and Samford that propelled Appalachian (14-3, 8-1 SoCon) to the top of the SoCon standings. The rookie was especially impressive in victories over UTC and SU, scoring 16 points to hand the Mocs their first conference loss of the season on Saturday and pouring in a career-high 20 points in Monday’s triumph over defending SoCon Tournament champion Samford.
For the season, Sydnor is averaging 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. The honor is the first of his career and the fourth for a Mountaineer this season.
Sydnor and the first-place Apps return to action on Saturday at Furman. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
