LRU Women Hang On Against Lincoln Memorial PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (13-4, 5-3) came away with a 72-67 win over Lincoln Memorial (9-7, 4-4) Saturday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Tex Turner Arena. L-R freshman guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) finished with a team-high 17 points while junior

guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) added 14 points as the Bears showed good balance with 10 players scoring en route to the win.
Lincoln Memorial's Lauren Cochran (Autryville, N.C.) led all scorers with 21 points and MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio) tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double for the Lady Railsplitters.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard Caroline Laughter (Hickory, N.C.) hit a three-pointer at the 15:30 mark of the second half to give the Bears their largest lead of the game at 49-37 before Lincoln Memorial rallied. Laughter finished with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds for L-R.
The Lady Railsplitters put together a 16-2 run to take a 53-51 advantage on a pair of free throws by Boddie with 11:04 remaining in the second half. However, Charles gave the Bears the lead for good with a three-pointer
which broke a 55-55 tie with 6:29 left in the contest. Lenoir-Rhyne would hold serve as the Bears connected on five free throws in the final 39 seconds of the game to come out with the league road victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Tusculum in a South Atlantic Conference game on Wednesday at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 6:00 p.m. Lincoln Memorial, meanwhile, hosts Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., as well.

No. 6 Lincoln Memorial Snaps Bears Four-Game Winning Streak

 

The sixth-ranked Lincoln Memorial Men's Basketball Team (17-1, 7-1) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (8-9, 4-4), 82-63, Saturday night at Tex Turner Arena in a South Atlantic Conference game. The loss put an end to the Bears' four-game winning streak.
Lincoln Memorial's Jake Troyli (Largo, Fla.) finished with a game-high 16 points and was one of five Railsplitters to score in double figures. Brandon Armstrong (Decatur, Ga.) and Vincent Bailey (Jennings, Fla.) added 14 points each for Lincoln Memorial, who remained in sole possession of second place in the league standings and is still one game behind Anderson.
Lenoir-Rhyne, despite the setback, was led by senior guard Kevin Davis' (Charlotte, N.C.) 13 points. L-R senior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) came off the bench to score 12 points as well. The Railsplitters jumped out to an 18-4 lead just 6:29 into the contest en route to a 43-26 halftime lead and never looked back. For the game, Lincoln Memorial shot 48 percent (29-of-60) and turned the ball over just three times in its second consecutive victory. Lenoir-Rhyne did shoot 82 percent (18-of-22) from the free throw line and junior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Tusculum in its next South Atlantic Conference game while Lincoln Memorial hosts league-rival Carson-Newman. Both contests are scheduled for Wednesday beginning at 8:00 p.m.

LRU Swimming Falls At Wingate

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Swimming Teams both fell to Wingatein a dual meet Saturday morning at the Wingate Natatorium. The Bulldogs won the men's competition by a 112-77 score and prevailed onthe women's side, 137-45. The Wingate women are ranked No. 22 in NCAADivision II.
Despite the setback, the Bears did have four individual winners on the day. For Lenoir-Rhyne, freshman Nathan Sears (Charlotte, N.C.) won the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.59. Other winners for the Bears on the men's side included freshman Jay Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.20) and sophomore Shane Courtney (Hendersonville, N.C.) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.92).
For the Lenoir-Rhyne women's team, freshman Chelsea Kyle (Knoxville,Tenn.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:23. Kyle's time was also a school-record for the Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face rival Catawba and Warren Wilson next Saturday in its final home meet of the year at the Shuford Physical Education Center. L-R will then compete in the 2012 Bluegrass Mountain ConferenceChampionship from February 15 through February 18 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center in Charlotte, N.C.
