Action was swift, decisive, and unanimous as the Boone’s Town Council moved for calling on the Town’s attorney to draft an ordinance prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons in town buildings and public spaces quickly as possible.  Attorney Sam Furgiuele explained the impact of a December ruling by North Carolina’s General Assembly on local ordinances that prohibit the carrying of concealed weapons, “You can adopt an ordinance that prohibits the carrying of a concealed handgun, they only include playgrounds, athletic fields, swimming pools, and athletic facilities.”  Immediately following the attorney’s presentation Councilman, Dr. Rennie Brantz, moved to direct the development of an ordinance prohibiting concealed weapons in all the areas allowed by the General Statutes, “I move, therefore, that authorize the town attorney to develop appropriate language to limit the availability of concealed weapons on government or town property or town parks.”  Dr. Brantz’s concerns were echoed by the Mayor and all council members as they passed the motion unanimously. The Council wants to take action as quickly as possible and plans to have an ordinance in place by the end of January or by Council meeting time in February.
