Appalachian State University track and field director John Weaver has been selected to be a member of the USA Track and Field men’s coaching staff for the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey in March, as announced by the
USA Track and Field National Selection Committee on Tuesday.
Coach Weaver was selected from a pool of coaches that filed resume forms to the USTF last January and was hand picked by men’s head coach Ed Gorman to be a member of the coaching staff this March.
“My first thoughts were how grateful I am to all the wonderful athletes and coaching staff members past and present, that have made our Appalachian program successful so as to make this opportunity happen for me. This includes the Appalachian Athletic Department Administration past and present as well,” stated Weaver.
Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb noted, “John Weaver is a leader in American Track and Field. His commitment to the sport transcends his love and commitment to Appalachian. This honor is very well deserved.”
“It is a dream of most coaches to someday represent the USA on a coaching staff for a World or Olympic event in any sport. My dream has been realized as a track and field coach. I can not be more proud to represent the USA as a member of the World Indoor Championship Team staff and Appalachian State Athletics in this position,” said Weaver.
The USA National Team will depart for Istanbul on March 4 for the World Indoor Championships that will take place March 9-11. This year’s meet is shaping up to become the largest gathering in the terms of participating nation in the history of the indoor championships according to Turkish Meet Officials.
Weaver is in his 30th season as the director of the women’s track and cross country program and in his 16th season as the director of both the women’s and men’s programs at ASU. Weaver assumed the duties of directing both programs in the fall of 1995.
