For the second time in three days, Nehemiah Stafford held his team's fate in his hands. And like he did Wednesday night against Watauga, Stafford nailed a pair of free throws with

12 seconds left as the Ashe County High men's basketball team defeated Wilkes Central 37-36 Friday night at The Nest in Moravian Falls, NC.
The win also gives Ashe County (14-1 overall; 9-0 Mountain Valley Conference) a two-game lead on the Eagles (11-3; 7-2) for first place in the MVC. The Huskies also own the tie-breaker as they swept the season series. Stafford, thanks to his late-game heroics, finished with six points. Zeb Richardson led the Huskies with 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Sam Gammons had 11 points.
Wilkes Central (14-0; 9-0) won the women's game by defeating Ashe County, 64-46. MacKenzie Johnson led the Huskies (5-10; 2-7) with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Katie Rider led the Eagles with 22 points and eight boards.

Hickory Down St. Stephens In OT

The Hickory Red Tornadoes blew a seven-point third quarter lead, but rallied to beat St. Stephens 60-53 in overtime at Craft Gymnaisum in Hickory, NC. The win leaves Hickory in sole possession of first place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference.
The Red Tornadoes (15-2 overall; 5-0 NW3A/4A) who have won 12 in a row, led Alexander Central (11-5; 4-1) by one game for first place. The Cougars defeated South Caldwell 52-43 on Friday night. The Indians (11-6; 3-2)  are in third, two games off the pace.
The game ended in a 50-50 tie at the end of regulation time. Hickory turned four Indians' turnovers to start the overtime period into a 56-50 lead and the Indians never got any closer than three points the rest of the way.
