The new Avery County jail had the ribbon cut in a snowy Friday event, opening the way for weekend events at the new facility.  The project was a constructed by Jeff Herd of MB Kahn Construction Management, the project coming in under the original projection of $9,180,000.00, the actual cost including renovation of the old jail $6,800,000. The original jail capacity was 19 beds, the new capacity is 62 beds. This new jail will trim the large cost of shipping inmates, with now 23 staff where there was 9. The old jail building life expectancy was 30 years, the life expectancy for the new building is 40-50 years. The public is invited to see the new jail Saturday, and for a $25 fee, the first 30 who would take the challenge can spend Saturday night in the jail with the funds going to two different Avery charities.  Inmates will be moved to new state of the art facility as early as Tuesday, Jan 17.
