ASU senior Austin Trotman has been named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week and Southern Conference Wrestler of the Month for December, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Trotman went 8-1 in December to close out 2011, finishing the year at 16-1. The 184-pounder opened the month with a
9-4 decision over John Dickson at the team's Virginia Tech dual to tally his 100th career victory, becoming the third Mountaineer to reach the century mark.
In the team's SoCon opener against conference newcomer Gardner-Webb, Trotman earned a 2:17 pin to lead his team to a 41-2 victory. In his final dual of the month, the senior earned a 10-5 win over Ohio's Ryan Garringer, improving his dual record to 4-0.
At the Reno Tournament of Champions, Trotman earned a 5-0 shutout of No. 17 Matt Ryan of West Virginia before suffering his first loss of the season to Wyoming's No. 3 Joe LeBlanc. He concluded the day with two more wins, including a 4-1 decision over Binghamton's Nate Schiedel to capture third-place in Reno.
Last week, Trotman dominated his three dual matches, capturing 17 of 18 possible team points. On Thursday, he pinned George-Mason's Alex Stanley in 4:30, helping the Apps to a 42-0 sweep of the Patriots. The victory marked the team's first shutout of a Division I team in almost four years.
Then, on Monday, Trotman recorded the team's second fastest pin of the year with a 20-second fall against Cleveland State's Corbin Boone. The same day, he wrapped up the week with an 18-3 (7:00) technical fall in SoCon action against Campbell's TeShaun Johnson.
Trotman now stands at 114 career victories, tied with the most career wins in Appalachian State history. After starting the season tabbed No. 14, Trotman climbed to No. 10 in December's final InterMat Wrestling rankings and is slotted No. 9 in the most-recent edition.
Trotman's monthly selection follows recognition as November's Wrestler of the Month after posting an 8-0 mark to start the season. He was selected as the season's first Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 16 and has earned the squad's third weekly honors this season.
The Southern Conference's Athlete of the Month honorees highlight excellence among student-athletes across their respective sports. Athletes of the month are nominated by each member institution and selected by the conference office.
Chattanooga freshman Nick Soto was also nominated for the monthly award after earning an 8-2 decision over No. 4 B.J. Futrell of Illinois.
The Mountaineers head to Grand Prairie, Texas this weekend to take part in the Lone Star Duals. The Apps are set to face Brown, Harvard, No. 12 Oklahoma and Utah Valley in the one-day dual-meet frenzy.
