During Monday night’s Board of Education meeting Director of Personnel, Marshall Gasperson, presented Bethel Teacher, Darcy Grimes, to the Board of Education as North West North Carolina’s Teacher of the Year. During his comments Mr. Gasperson acknowledged the effectiveness of Ms. Grimes' teaching strategies and the pride he observed in her students during his visits to her classroom. Ms. Grimes expressed her appreciation to everyone and her pleasure at receiving this recognition. However she primarily expressed her pride in this process bringing attention to the good teaching that goes on in Watauga County and the good programs at Bethel Elementary School. Ms. Grimes’ next step will be to prepare herself for competition with the other regional winners for the title of North Carolina Teacher of the Year. For the next level of the selection process a portfolio she has developed containing evidence of all aspects of her teaching and professional preparation will be revised and submitted to the state level for assessment. Then in March she will travel to Raleigh where she will be required to present speeches to the state level selection committee and go through additional rounds of interviews with them. The announcement of which teacher has been selected as the North Carolina Teacher of the Year will be made this spring.
