Appalachian State men’s tennis players Alain Humblet (Montreal, Quebec/DE Mortagne) and Philip Kloc (Melbourne, Australia/Mentone Grammar School) have been ranked as the No. 8 doubles pair in the

Carolina region, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday. The recognition marks the highest ranking by a Mountaineer doubles pair in recent history.
“It’s a great achievement for these guys,” commented ASU head coach Bob Lake, “and the Carolinas are loaded with a lot of great teams. I’m glad to see them getting the recognition; now we still have to go out and win this season.”
At the end of last season, the two seniors received accolades as a 2011 first-team all-Southern Conference doubles team. The fall season saw the duo earn a 10-4 tournament record and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2011 ITA Division I Carolinas Regional Championship.
The pair compiled a 17-5 record competing as the Mountaineers’ No. 1 doubles team during the spring 2011 season. They assembled a 12-match win streak that extended from February into April and look to be one of the league’s best teams this year.
The Carolina region includes Division-I teams from both North and South Carolina. The ITA’s regional rankings are determined by a committee of coaches using objective and subjective factors, including previous seasons and fall tournament results.
Rounding out the Carolina rankings, Humblet and Kloc were joined by pairs from Clemson, Davidson, Duke, Elon, Furman, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wake Forest.
The team is currently preparing for its first match of the 2011-12 campaign. The Apps open the season by traveling to No. 43 UNC Wilmington on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m.
